Clouds versus a ceiling

A ceiling is the lowest broken or overcast cloud layer, or reported vertical visibility into an obscuration. Few or scattered clouds are not a ceiling. “None reported” does not mean the entire sky is cloud-free. Heights here are feet above ground, not above sea level.

Two pressure numbers, two purposes

The altimeter setting lets aircraft altimeters indicate airport elevation on the ground. Sea-level pressure uses a different reduction for weather analysis; it can differ from the altimeter setting. Missing sea-level pressure is not filled with the altimeter value.

What VFR and IFR tell you

When supplied, the AWC flight category summarizes reported ceiling and visibility: VFR, marginal VFR (MVFR), instrument (IFR), or low instrument conditions (LIFR). It is a weather classification, not a complete assessment of flying conditions.

Observations and models answer different questions

An airport sensor measures the air at that station at a specific time. A model forecasts conditions over a grid. Airport readings are kept separate from the forecast-model average so measurements and predictions are not mixed.
