Sources, report ages & coverage
Public NOAA PMEL and AOML tropical Pacific and hurricane Saildrone datasets are discovered every six hours. Current and previous mission years are included, up to 24 datasets. Other operators and private missions are not included. A mission’s year or name does not confirm that it is still operating.
The app checks observations every ten minutes while visible, using a shared ten-minute server cache. “Near real-time” means a report within 90 minutes; “Delayed report” means 90 minutes to 24 hours; older reports remain labeled. These are Carr Weather age categories, not NOAA operational states. Satellite transmission and public release can take hours, even when instruments sample every minute.
Each vehicle uses one timestamped observation row for both its position and measurements. Missing sensors are never filled from another time. This compact public feed does not include individual quality flags; “filtered” in a field name is not a guarantee of full research quality control. Wind and wave measurements can represent different averaging windows.
